Purpose

This weekend course is our foundation freediving course covering the necessary skills and knowledge for a recreational freediver to safely freedive up to a maximum depth of 20 metres. This course is for students already confident in the water especially the ocean.  It is ideal for people who are confident swimmers, surfers, and scuba divers or simply those people who what to challenge themselves. The course consists of three components. The first component is on knowledge and theory development of approximately 5 hours (including a multiple choice test) in the classroom. The second component is pool based practicing the freediving skills of static apnea, dynamic apnea and rescues. This is approximately 4 hours. The third and final component is in the ocean from our specialised freediving boat practicing the freediving skills of free immersion, constant weight, equalisation and safety. This is approximately 4 to 5 hours including the boat trip to and from the dive site (included in the price). We pride ourselves on predicting the best weather conditions for our students to have the best possible experience on our own dive boat. We have the most extant record of visibility and diving conditions off the Gold Coast. See Visibility and Diving Conditions.

For time poor students unable to attend the Friday night theory component (for Gold Coast students) we offer a self-study option for the more motivated students. We will email you the 110 page manual which you are expected to read and answer the Knowledge Review Questions which will be discussed with your instructor prior to the start of your course on the Saturday morning (usually 8am). This self-study option is available for all AIDA 2 Freediver level courses and higher. Please inquire for further information about this option.

If you would like to immerse yourself more fully in your course check out one of our Crater Lakes Freediving Retreats.

AIDA Crossover Evaluation for Students from Other Freediving Organisations

We often get inquiries from students from other freediving organisations who have not completed part of their requirements of their certification. Students have the option of completing their certification with the world body, AIDA International. To do so, such students will need to complete a Crossover Evaluation. This involves:

  • Assessment of the level of knowledge of the student by means of passing the AIDA 2 Freediver written exam at 75% or higher. Allow two hours for this assessment. Cost is 115.
  • Assessment of the pool or confined water skills equivalent to the level of the AIDA 2 Freediver course. Allow about two hours for this assessment. Cost is $115.
  • Assessment of all ocean or open water skills equivalent to the level of the AIDA 2 Freediver course. This is typically one morning of about 4 hours including the boat trip to and from the dive site. Cost is $115.

Freediving Gold Coast charges a total of $320 (including certification fee) for this Crossover Evaluation. Please note this is an evaluation or assessment and does not include teaching. On successful completion of the Crossover Evaluation students will be certified as AIDA 2 Freediver with AIDA International.

Freediving Gold Coast TV

Here is a nice video of AIDA Master Instructor Cristy Gearon illustrating a very relaxed 20m FIM (Free Immersion) for AIDA 2 students off the Gold Coast in about 22 metres visibility. This is one of the key skills learnt on the Ocean Freediver course for AIDA 2 Certification.
